Work Room Four Exhibition

18 Sep – 09 Oct 2016, 10 am – 6 pm
Work Room Four

From the organizer:

After three acclaimed annual open exhibitions from 2013 to 2015, the Fourth Hanoi Open Exhibition exhibiting works from both professional and amateur Vietnamese and international artists, is unrivaled for diversity of artwork.

Over the past two decades there has been phenomenal and unprecedented artistic, commercial and social development in Vietnam. Hanoi remains central to the country’s creative community. Contemporary Vietnamese artists have become respected around the world for their resourceful approach, cultural and social dialogue and creative sensitivity. Likewise, foreign artists are increasingly finding Hanoi and Vietnam an invaluable source of inspiration for their own work.

There is no central theme to the Open Exhibition but previous shows have been heralded as being vibrant, energised and stimulating. Artists are invited to submit a maximum of two pieces, which are then considered by a panel of both local and international art experts before being curated for display. The exhibition is a unique showcase for art in a variety of mediums; painting, sculpture, photography and print, and is as much an opportunity for art enthusiasts as it is for the artists themselves.

Collectively the first three Open Exhibition’s had exhibited over 350 works by over 200 artists. Over 2000 visitors have enjoyed the exhibitions and tours and school trips are also offered to further engage the Hanoi community. It is expected that this year’s show will exceed the figures of previous years.

Film – “The Life”

Thu 22 Sep 2016, 7.30 pm

From the organizer:

The boundary between life and death is clearest in the war. In “The Life” (2006), duties to nation, family and personal integrity collide under the bombs of a distant foe.

“Stubborn” Linh (Võ Thành Tâm) is a newlywed soldier ordered to the front before he has a chance to satisfy his mother’s greatest wish – a grandson. She will not stand for this, and heads to the battlefields along with Linh’s wife. The two groups chase each other through missed connections and minefields, under an almost sadisticly fateful barrage of bombs.

A final desperate mission to truck vital cargo back to his home village forces Linh to choose between competing desires.

Dao Duy Phuc’s film blends horror, humor and humanity in equal measure. With cinematography that often mirrors old propaganda films, the director creates a lively crucible for his characters’ struggles.

According to statistics from the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism, Hanoi is home to more than 1,000 craft villages, 300 of which are recognised as traditional villages.
